Church History
Faith A.M.E. Zion Church was formed in November of 1999 as a result of the move of Shaw Temple A.M.E. Zion Church from Atlanta, GA to Smyrna, GA. Approximately 22 members stayed behind, firmly believing that an A.M.E. Zion presence was needed in the city of Atlanta. True to our name, Faith Church has been an amazing story of belief and trust in God to supply our needs. The first pastor of Faith was Dr. Ndugu G.B. T’Ofori-Atta, a former pastor of Shaw Temple and a retired professor of the Interdenominational Theological Center (I.T.C.). A renowned Pan-African scholar and deeply spiritual leader, “Dr. T.”, as he is affectionately known, uniquely and brilliantly led the church during its formative years of transition and growth. Dr. T. helped to poise the church for progressive ministry for the 21st century.
After worshipping at four different sites, purchasing property and starting several new ministries, God brought us back to the land from whence we came and continues to bless us in a mighty way. Located at 38 Hamilton E. Holmes Road in Northwest Atlanta, the physical plant is comprised of a sanctuary, administrative and education building and parsonage. The plant has recently been renovated and ready to facilitate our ministry to the community.
In October of 2005, we were blessed to receive our second pastor in our history, the Reverend Lester Agyei McCorn. Pastor McCorn is returning “home.” While a student at Morehouse College, he served as a student minister at Shaw Temple prior to being assigned to his first pastorate in Summerville and Menlo, Georgia. Dr. T’Ofori-Atta was Rev. McCorn’s mentor and performed his African naming ceremony at Martin Luther King International Chapel nearly twenty years ago. (Agyei is a West African [Akan] name meaning “messenger of God.”) Prior to coming to Faith, Pastor McCorn served as the pastor of the Martin Temple A.M.E. Zion Church of Chicago, Illinois. He is a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. A visionary leader, Pastor McCorn is leading Faith Church to the next level of ministry.
Looking toward our future, we believe that we have been given a vision to help save the soul of America and the heart of Atlanta. To achieve that vision, we are planning an innovative and comprehensive church community, complete with worship and educational center, a day care center, a Christian school, athletic fields, senior housing, and more. The new Faith campus, located on twelve acres of land at Fairburn Road in Southwest Atlanta, will be surrounded by a 476-acre master planned community, Princeton Lakes, the new Deerwood Academy elementary school, and the new Camp Creek Marketplace. We even have designs to be one church in two locations. We thank God for our blessed history and our bright future. We are truly happy to be “Building New Ministries and Facilities for Saving, Serving and Strengthening People.”
